As a teacher, you should try to use as much English as possible with your students to give them more practice, but this doesn’t mean you should never use Chinese. You may decide to use Chinese to translate an abstract word, e.g. ‘spirit’, or you may want to clarify the meaning of a word. Sometimes it is best to talk about grammar in Chinese so you can be sure the children understand. In addition, cultural references are best described in Chinese so the context is clear.

On the other hand, in some situations it is better if the teacher speaks in English rather than Chinese. Firstly, you can use English for instructions or simple language. This sets a good example and encourages the students to use English as well. Routine or common language can be learned and practised in English, e.g. “Open your books to page ___”.

You can also try to encourage the children themselves to use English. One easy way is to teach the English for simple and useful questions like “What does X mean?” or “How do you spell that?”. You can make a poster containing these expressions so the students always see them and feel comfortable saying them. If students are not yet comfortable with speaking, you can ask them to listen and demonstrate that they understand by doing an action.

There are some situations, however, where you may want to encourage students to use Chinese. For example, a child may want to explain to his partner how to do an activity – this may be difficult for him to do in English. The children may wish to discuss a grammar point, and this too would be easier in Chinese. Finally, when speaking, a child may use one Chinese word in an English sentence because she doesn’t know the English word. She is still trying her best to communicate in English, and you can teach her the word she wants to know.
